That is the model’s own hair. No extensions were used for the twist. We did use synthetic hair to make the bun, but that was made off her head and pinned on.
When I was a bridesmaid in my cousin’s wedding I wore my natural hair braided up with a bun hairpiece on top. Not that donut looking bun. It was a more natural looking bun with a twist around it. It came out cute. Plus it looked good with the strapless dresses we wore

They are not braids they are two strand twist and they were made skinny as you say, by parting the hair with very narrow parts.
